Bora Bora is a small South Pacific island northwest of Tahiti in French Polynesia. Surrounded by sand- fringed motus (islets) and a turquoise lagoon protected by a coral reef, it’s known for its scuba diving. It's also a popular luxury resort destination where some guest bungalows are perched over the water on stilts. At the island's center rises Mt. Otemanu, a 727m dormant volcano.

1) The main produce of the island is the coconut–the island is filled with coconut trees lining the sandy beaches.

2) The island was originally inhabited by Polynesian settlers, and they named the island Pora Pora, which means “first born”. However, the first Europeans to visit misunderstood the native people & heard Bora Bora–the name stuck!

3) Bora Bora is surrounded by coral reef and several smaller “islets”, or formations of large rock with minimal vegetation.

4) According to the most recent census, the permanent population of Bora Bora is 8,880.

5) In WWII, Bora Bora was a military supply and seaplane base. It was known as “Operation Bobcat” and kept up a  force of nearly 7, 000 men and nine ships.

6) Hotel Bora Bora, one of the original hotels of the island, began the “bungalow trend”–which are small houses that sit on stilts over the water. Many resorts have options ranging from affordable for everyone, to incredibly expensive with added luxuries.

7) There are no forms of public transportation on the island–be prepared to either rent a car or use a bicycle while here!

8) Snorkeling and scuba diving around the lagoon are popular activities. If you’re lucky, you may catch a sighting of a shark or sting ray–as both species are native to the waters here.
